ZETA CHAPTER HISTORY



ALPHA SIGMA STATE
The DELTA KAPPA GAMMA SOCIETY INTERNATIONAL


Zeta Chapter of Alpha Sigma State located in Chelan and Douglas counties in Washington State was organized March 28, 1942, by Florence E. Peterson and State Founder, Dr. Eva Anderson, former Douglas County Superintendent of Schools. Dr. Anderson, acclaimed author of non-fiction "Chief Seattle," held positions as University of Washington Trustee and State Legislator. 

The original founding members are: Marion Asher, Ruth Bump, Ruby Long, Marjorie Rainier, Mayme Sterling, Grace Wiester, Nora Douglass, Helen Jasper Roos, Lola Larner, Mildred Paulson, Lora Sherwood, Alice Van de Ven Hande, Helen Arnold Hansen, Arvilla Allison Nilson, Laura Bigdow, Bessie Carson, Adah Daugherty, Dorothy Isom, Florence Holcomb Mattoz, and Velva Graves. 

First Chapter President, Ruby Long, was a Cashmere High School principal and is responsible for establishing Grant-in-aid in 1947 during Ruth Bump's Presidency. Miss Bump, still a Zeta member, resides in Eugene, Oregon. Since 1947, sixty-three women have been awarded Zeta grants. 

Three special ladies, Marie Fox, Ruth Bump and Margaret Weed, were honored at the Washington State Convention in April 2000 for their fifty plus years of involvement and dedicated efforts in Delta Kappa Gamma. Margaret Weed was also recognized by Zeta Chapter in 1996 as outstanding "woman of this half century". She was state vice president and still an active committee member on Wenatchee Hospital Foundation. Margaret and her husband have given funds to the hospital which has a wing named for them. Additionally, they awarded scholarships to youth involved in agriculture and education In 1998, Marie Fox gave largest sum ever to the hospital foundation. 

Special "Angels" who contributed greatly to Zeta Chapter are Myrtle Daneen, Sidney Davies Mundy, Florence Dohlke, Lillian Grace Brown, Helen Orton, Noxean Handy, Margorie Beale, Helen Bennett, Helen Barnes, Dorothy Barnes, Bonnie Diaz, Marje Stegeman and they continue to be ever present in our memories and hearts. 

When a chapter is as old as Zeta, all members are "Key" personnel and extraordinary "Angels on a Mission" - a special one!
